Advertising or contracting for credit repair? Know what makes the offer risky before you publish or sign.

Paste your credit-repair wording. Get a severity-ranked pre-check against CROA — guaranteed score claims and new-credit-identity schemes, upfront fees charged before the work is done, missing “dispute it yourself for free” disclosures, and contracts with no three-business-day cancellation right — before a credit-repair offer becomes an FTC or state-AG problem.

Key Takeaways

  • Credit-repair wording vs published CROA duties, severity-ranked.
  • Actionable fix checklist — never a silent rewrite or auto-publish.
  • Honesty: a heuristic pre-check — not a credit-repair compliance certification.

What it is

CreditRepairPrecheck — definition

CreditRepairPrecheck pre-checks a for-profit credit-repair offer and its contract against the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA, 15 U.S.C. § 1679 et seq.) — the § 1679b ban on misrepresentations and on charging before the service is performed, the § 1679c consumer-rights disclosures, and the § 1679d written-contract and three-business-day cancellation duties — returning a scored, severity-ranked report with concrete edits before you publish or sign.

What this is NOT

  • Not a credit-repair-compliance certification, a license, or a compliance guarantee.
  • Not a fee-timing or contract-delivery verifier — whether fees were charged only after performance and whether the rights summary was delivered is an advisory checklist item, never looked up.
  • Not a substitute for legal review of FTC, CROA, FCRA, or state-law obligations.

Why credit-repair offers get challenged

Offer published. Credit-repair practice challenged.

Guaranteed results & new identities

A “guaranteed score increase,” a promise to delete accurate negative items, or a “new credit identity / TIN” scheme is the core prohibited representation under CROA 15 U.S.C. § 1679b — and it also runs into the credit-reporting statutes. No lawful credit-repair firm guarantees an outcome.

Charging before the work is done

§ 1679b(c) bars a credit-repair organization from charging before the service is performed to the consumer’s satisfaction. Upfront, enrollment, setup, or non-refundable fees collected in advance are the most-enforced CROA violation.

Missing consumer-rights disclosure

§ 1679c requires a written statement, before signing, that the consumer may dispute inaccurate information themselves at no cost and that the firm is not affiliated with any government agency. Offers that sell the service without these disclosures omit a mandatory notice.

A contract with no cancellation right, or a void waiver

§ 1679d requires a written, signed contract with specified terms and a three-business-day right to cancel; § 1679e voids any waiver of the consumer’s CROA rights. “Non-refundable, no cancellation” terms are both unlawful and unenforceable.
